DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES View Diesel Engines OUR LEGACY There's a difference between model locomotives. Sure, they can all pull cars, blow smoke and ring bells. But if you are looking for more, look no further than Lionel LEGACY. Learn More about LEGACY THE POWER OF ONE Running multiple locomotives

The modern diesel locomotive is a self contained version of the electric locomotive. Like the electric locomotive, it has electric drive, in the form of traction motors driving the axles and controlled with electronic controls. A huge locomotive like this uses an average of 1.5 gallons of diesel per mile (352 L per 100 km) when towing about five passenger cars. Locomotives towing hundreds of fully loaded freight cars use many times more fuel that this, so even a five or 10 percent decrease in efficiency would quickly add up to a significant increase in fuel costs. Diesel locomotives, technically known as diesel-electrics, came into widespread use following development of Electro-Motive Corporation’s (later, General Motors' Electro-Motive Division) EA/EB design, first tested on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) in 1937. American Locomotive Company (ALCO) produced a wide range of diesel-electric locomotives until it ceased manufacture in 1969.

See the full video here: https://youtu.be/HASLQp87Ix4Have you ever wondered what it's like to operate a High Hood locomotive with limited visibility? The Diesel engine, on account of its lower weight and fewer units, is much cheaper in initial cost; indeed, it has been stated by one well-known manufacturer of Diesel rail-cars that, owing to the light weight and low cost of this type, it is possible to purchase several such vehicles for the price of a train of equal passenger-carrying capacity hauled by a steam locomotive. Diesel locomotives offer significant operating advantages over steam locomotives.

Diesel locomotive

A large diesel engine turns a shaft that drives a generator which makes electricity. This electrical energy powers large electric motors at the wheels called 'traction motors'. DC and AC Power: Some locomotives use DC generators and others use AC. Modern alternating current locomotives have better traction and adhesion and are used on trains that carry heavier loads. DC is still used because it is cheaper Diesel Locomotive (ディーゼルきかんしゃ, Dīzeru Kikan-sha?) is the Quirk used by Willie Wanda.

The four drive motors use this electricity to generate over 64,000 pounds of thrust. The diesel engine in a diesel-electric locomotive provides the drive for the main alternator which, in turn, provides the power required for the traction motors. We can see from this therefore, that the power required from the diesel engine is related to the power required by the motors.

Diesel fuel has become the preferred fuel for railroad locomotive use due to its lower volatility, lower cost, and common availability. The diesel engine (A) is the main component of the diesel-electric Instead, the diesel engine is used to turn a huge electricity generator /alternator which produces electric current (earlier Direct Current, nowadays Alternating Current), which is then transmitted to traction motors which then produce the actual (rotational) torque that turns the wheels of the locomotive.
